When I painting this piece I was also going through a bit of a change in my own aesthetic and taste, which made some of the decisions tricky. I found myself sitting on the fence quite a bit, questioning where I wanted the painting to go.
But looking at it now, I feel like it’s really come together. It has this elegant, moody quality that I was aiming for, and it feels like a pretty honest reflection of where I was creatively at the time.
This painting represents so much of what I love about making art, nature, colour, texture and the whole process of painting itself. But more than that, it represents a change in direction for me personally and creatively.
It was actually one of the pieces that helped inspire me to create my snail mail club ‘The Becoming Letters’, which makes it even more special to me. It feels connected to a particular chapter of my life and the person I was and becoming.
I love that it sits somewhere between traditional art and something much more abstract and intuitive. That balance is something I’ve really fallen in love with in my painting practice, having enough structure to hold the piece together, but still allowing room for instinct, emotion and a bit of the unexpected.
